Islamic toilet etiquette

I half-heard an interview with a young Muslim woman on Today FM a few minutes ago and decided to find out for myself what Muslims really think of squat toilets. The first link is this Wikipedia page on the subject which states,

The Islamic faith has particular rules regarding personal hygiene when going to the toilet. This code is known as Qadaahul Haajah [1] and is extremely prescriptive. The rules were established during times before the invention of toilet paper or toilet seats. In many parts of the Muslim World, squat toilets are the norm and toilet paper remains rare and its use a matter of dispute.

It should be borne in mind that none of the following points is contained within the Koran and all are derived from hadith sources and the collected opinions of people throughout history. The Koran is silent on any of the issues below including issues of sidedness such as whether one uses the left or right hand, order of stepping into or out of toilet areas, or which foot stress is placed upon. The only issue which it does touch upon in relation to toileting, is the one of washing one’s hands especially following going to the toilet which is mentioned in verse 5:6 of the Koran.

I recall from the interview Ray D’Arcy asked the woman if the Koran said that squat toilets should be used. She artfully dodged the question by replying that Muslims use squat toilets all over the world, while also implying that it was in the Koran if I remember correctly.

As Islam is now the third largest religion in Ireland I think the sales of new toilets might be affected by future trends..

It appears that the Danes have been just a little too good at slowing down traffic by employing a new method of attracting the attention of speeding drivers to speed limit signs. Drivers are literally queuing up to watch the young beauties holding the signs. Oops. The following video might be viewed as NSFW so click through with caution!

Or maybe not, it’s a video made by the Danish Road Safety Council to get drivers to watch out for speed signs. It’s also become a huge viral hit on the Internet, “the campaign was seen 1 million times across 180 countries, being viewed 55 times even in Vatican [in the first week]” (source)

I wonder what Gay Byrne would say about this, and why didn’t Ray D’Arcy think of this? (via)

This is the last of the baby posts, for a while. Only a day after Mairead announced she was pregnant, Jenny gave birth to baby Kate on Saturday evening around 8pm. Ray D’Arcy was on the radio this morning beaming and full of the joys of the world. Great to hear that on a Monday morning!

News hot off the radio is that Mairead Farrell of the Ray D’Arcy’s show on Today FM is five months pregnant. I don’t know what it is but everyone seems to be either pregnant or just after having a baby. What’s in the water?

Back on July 24th, Ray and Jenny announced that Jenny was pregnant, and she’s now on maternity leave. The baby should be popping out any time now. I’m surprised the birth hasn’t happened already! We’re now waiting on an announcement from the recently married Will Hanafin and I wonder who will replace the lovely Mairead when she’s out on leave?

It’s almost a year since the US book was launched! I was there, and got some great photos of Ray, Jenny and Mairead. Such a lot has happened in the last year!

For your viewing pleasure, here’s the team doing the Ok Go dance, before anyone was pregnant!

Radio DJ, Ray D'Arcy and Jenny Kelly are expecting a baby in a few months time it was revealed yesterday in the Tribune. For those of us who don't buy that fine newspaper, Ian Dempsey announced the news this morning. Ray and co. were inundated with texts this morning congratulating the couple on their good news!

Good luck guys, hope the pregnancy goes well!

The referrers list on In Photos shows the interest people had trying to find photos of the couple. Luckily my US Book photos have always featured highly in Google searches for them!
