Happy birthday Star Wars! Apparently you’re 35 today! I’m not a fan of you though. I only saw this scene in French while I was an exchange student in the town of Morlaix in Brittany many years ago and other films I saw in English had such wooden acting I had to stop watching. My son is a fan though but only from the Lego games. In a bizarre twist, he knows the main characters yet hasn’t seen the movies.

Even though I never saw this scene in English I still thought the quote from this scene was, “Luke, I am Your Father”. It’s so famous, it’s listed on this page of misquotations!

Harry Potter: the story so far

Well, of course if you’ve read the books you’ll know exactly how it’s going to end and how they got there for that matter. I read 2 or 3 of them about 8 years ago so I may have forgotten a detail or two. Who was the big beardy guy who …. ?

It seems to me that Harry Potter is as much the films as it is the books. More so in fact because of the wider audience. Hell, I never bought any of the books (got a lend of ‘em at the time), but I do have a box set of the first 5 or 6 films. Yes, haven’t watched them either.

The whole thing is rather baffling, a bit like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze back in the early nineties, but this has gone on way longer … (too long if you ask me!)

So, has anyone made a “cam” version of the film yet? Come on Internet, it’s been out a day or two. Surely the “zero day” pirates already have it? I wonder how many kids will come across this post looking for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 (CAM).avi”. Just go buy the books, and while you’re at it buy other books too and expand your mind.

But first, go watch this great chat between Richard Dawkins and Neil deGrasse on the Poetry of Science. That will blow your mind, a hell of a lot more than Harry Potter will do. There’s real magic in science. (Thanks Alex!)

Terminator Salvation Review

So, the reviews are mixed but mostly bad but don’t let them put you off. I went to see Terminator Salvation last night and, maybe because of my low expectations, I enjoyed the movie!

The movie won’t strain your brain cells, it’s a pure action film with huge robots, explosions, fights and a mostly straight forward story. If you loved Starship Troopers, I think you’ll like this film!

“This town needs an anema”. That was a line from last week’s “A town called Eureka” and I knew I recognised it. It was a line in the original Batman movie! I couldn’t find a clip of this scene, but here’s the first level of Batman the Movie on the Commodore 64!

Watch Hans Rosling’s great talk at TED 2006 where he, “demonstrates how developing countries are pulling themselves out of poverty. He shows us the next generation of his Trendalyzer software — which analyzes and displays data in amazingly accessible ways, allowing people to see patterns previously hidden behind mountains of stats. (Ten days later, he announced a deal with Google to acquire the software.) He also demos Dollar Street, a program that lets you peer in the windows of typical families worldwide living at different income levels. Be sure to watch straight through to the (literally) jaw-dropping finale.”

It’s amazing to see how quickly Chile and other less developed nations have caught up with the “industrialised world”, and are about to surpass them in terms of health care. He’s speaking at the it@Cork conference on November 28th this year and should be very entertaining and insightful.

The end of the world

How will it end? I watched Earthstorm last night in which the moon was hit by a huge asteroid causing a gigantic split in the surface of our closest neighbour and potentially slicing off a bit that falls into the Earth killing everyone. Luckily, demolition expert John Redding (played by Stephen Baldwin who’s the spit of his brother) saves the day and everyone lives happily ever after. Well probably. I didn’t bother watching the last few minutes.

I can’t believe Dirk Benedict appeared in this awful film.

Anyway, here’s another way for the world to end. Thanks Alex for the link! WTF?^^

The first mention of “youtube Earthstorm” took me to this television commercial for NicoDerm. Guess there are more fans of Anna Silk than of the movie!

PS. First Christmas advert of the season spotted while I fast forwarded through this film on Sky+!

Top five movie car chases

The Sunday Times hitlist listed the top 5 movie car chases in memory of the grandfather of stunts, Bud Ekins died earlier this month at the age of 77. He appeared in several films including The Great Escape, Bullitt and coordinated the stunts in CHiPS. I won’t subject you to Poncherello, but thanks to Youtube, here are the best car chases of all time:

The French Connection (1971)
… it’s never better than when Hackman’s character Popeye Doyle commandeers a Pontiac LeMans and hares off after an elevated E-train driven by a hitman.

Bullitt (1968)
Bud Ekins drove Steve McQueen’s Ford Mustang when it went airborne in the following car chase around San Francisco!

The Bourne Identity (2002)
Could this chase sequence be even better than the one in the Italian Job? The old British Leyland Mini shows what it could do on the streets of Paris.

Vanishing Point (1971)
Don’t ask Barry Newman to deliver your high-powered car. He might just get into a few scraps on the way. This is the trailer for the film. Chase clips are on Youtube but not embeddable unfortunately.

The Blues Brothers (1980)
Apparently this was the most expensive car chase ever, and it’s easy to see why. Jake and Elwood give the police a run for their money!

Boycott Star Wars, not Ewan McGregor

A recent comment urged the boycotting of Ewan McGregor on the grounds that he has insulted Star Wars fans. I don’t know what he did to make them mad but I think Star Wars should be boycotted on the premise that they were crap films and the sooner the whole merchandising juggernaut disappears the better. Even Grandad thinks they’re rather strange. How long is your lightsaber Grandad?

‘Course I’m probably alone in thinking this but I should start an online petiton. Who’ll sign?

PS. Only joking Conor, about the boycott part anyway!
