IIRC your dead HDD is a Fujitsu. They had major problems with the range of MPG3xxx series drives where they used defective controller chips from Cirrus Logic. See these Register articles for more info. Apparently the problem is with the epoxy mould compound used in the manufacture of Cirrus’ Himalaya 2.0 and Nimbur chips.
We have had at least 10+ of these drives die in Cork Co. Co. with no hope of recovery.
